1798. Fine. JOHNSON, Samuel. DR. JOHNSON'S TABLE-TALK: Containing aphorisms on literature, life, and manners, with anecdotes of distinguished persons: Selected and arranged from Mr. Boswell's Life of Johnson. London: Printed for C. Dilly in the Poultry, 1798. First edition. Octavo. [6],446 pp. Early tree-calf sides, skillfully rebacked and decorated to the period (gilt-stamped compartments, with a lyre at the center and floral tool in corners, and a red morocco label), marbled boards. Contemporary ink ownership on first blank. Fore-corners are worn at tips and gently rounded. Text leaves are clean but for the fainset blush of foxing on a few leaves. It is a handsome, near-fine copy. Published while the third edition of the Life was in the press 'in the life-time of Mr. Boswell, and with his cordial approbation.'
