Second issue of second enlarged edition of Motte's English translation of Newton's Principia (first published in 1729). 3 volumes, London, Sherwood, Neely, and Jones; and Davis and Dickson, 1819. 8vo, 225 x 140 mm, 8¾ x 5½ inches. Volume I: engraved portrait frontispiece, 25 plates of diagrams, lx pages of prelims, Preface, Life of Newton etc, 211 pages plus 4 pages of index. Volume II: 19 plates of diagrams plus 2 folding tables, pages (2), 321 plus 11 pages of index. Volume III: 10 plates of diagrams of which 8 folding, 11 diagrams in the text, pages (6), 231 plus 1 leaf of publisher's adverts. Rebound in modern half calf over marbled sides, extra gilt spines, contrasting red and green title labels with gilt lettering, gilt decoration between marbled paper and calf on covers, raised bands, all edges marbled, new marbled endpapers, housed in a brown cloth slipcase. Portrait lightly browned to margins, light offsetting onto title page, small inked out name on all 3 title pages, occasional very light foxing, 1 plate dusty in fore-edge margin, otherwise a very good clean tight set. The first edition was in only two volumes, the second edition of 1803 added a third volume accommodating the additions listed on our title page. The 1819 edition is the same as the 1803 except that the imprint is different, the Dedication, text and index have been reset, the erratum on the last page omitted, and in Volume III figures 1, 2, and 3 are at the end.
