London, Albemarle Street: John Murray, 1840-01-01. Hardcover. Good. Hardcover bound book. 1840. French Cookery: Comprising L'Art de la Cuisine Française; Le Patissier Royal; Le Cuisinier Parisien by The Late M. Carême. A New Edition with 73 illustrative plates. (original) Price Fifteen Shillings. Printed by William Clowes & Sons, Stamford-street. All 73 lithographed folding plates of elaborate dishes present. English translation of three of Careme's major works. Good (4 of 10). The front hinge (the inside portion of the flexible fold where book cover meets the book spine) is split (loose or open) the cover is still attached by the joint (the exterior flexible fold where book cover meets book spine). front fly detached. The paste-on spine title has worn away. Some minor celo-tape to TP & ffly. Minor fray to top spine. [see our images] This edition includes a page of errata, correcting errors of the text which would appear to be identical to the 1st edition. This 1840 printing would appear to be the 2nd printing, as the original was done in 1836, and there was at least a 3rd printing done in 1856. There is a Believe it or Not newspaper clipping and a few handwritten papers laid in. Original dark green-blue boards. The whole has some warp due to the construction of the book - the 73 fold-in plates make the center of the book 146 leaves thicker than the spine or edgepages and thus the book bulges in the middle. Moderate foxing throughout. Textblock firm although not tight. Careme became the major force and most important influence on European cookery of the time, due to the writing of these seminal works and cooking for such Royal personages as George IV of England and Alexander I of Russia. The coal fumes, heat and punishing hours took their toll, and Careme, worn out, died at 48 years of age.. * * * * * * * * * * {FREE Media Mail Shipping! Images available for any item, just ask.
