New - York:: Published by Samuel Wood, 362 Pearl - Street [ J. C. Totten, print ].. 1806.. 16mo. 3-7/8" x 3-3/16". 1st printing (American Imprints 11909; Hamilton 235; Rosenbach 325; Welch 1461.1). Not in the Osborne Catalogue, Gumuchian, nor the Spencer Catalogue. 16 pp.. Period stiff grey card-stock wraps, sewn. Wraps with two wood-cuts each.. Average wear. Some soiling to covers. A solid VG copy.. "Contains alphabets in hornbook form, a syllabary, with woodcuts illustrating objects in alphabetical order." [Rosenbach]. This work has the distinction of being the first publication issued by Wood, who would go on to a distinguished career in the publishing trade, with thousands of titles under his imprint. & & ABPC shows 4 cc of later printings, ca. 1815 - 1820, to have come to auction in the past 30+ years, none of this first printing.& & Rare in the trade. . T.p. vignette. Alphabet pp. 4 - 16, two per page, each letter illustrated with a cut [for 26 total]. Cuts by Anderson [attribution per Rosenbach].
