Memorial Catalogue, Heraldic Exhibition, Edinburgh 1891
Published to memorialize, "the first public exhibition on heraldry in Great Britain with high standards of documentation" (Grove Dictionary of Art). The historic 1,217 heraldic items exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh ended October 3, 1891 and was held in conjunction with the autumn 1891 meeting of the Royal Archaeological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland. Grant, the principal author was a leading authority on heraldry: He was later appointed chief herald, Lord Lyon King of Arms (1929-1945). The profusely illustrated deluxe large paper catalog with a revised, augmented text superseded the earlier, much smaller (17 cm) catalog with two illustrations and was limited to 252 examples, 250 numbered and sold by subscription, with 118 plates on 102 leaves with descriptive letterpress interleaves, printed by 2 methods including lithograph, some plates in color, some in facsimile, 4 folding, including a color facsimile of the earliest known Scots grant of arms. Offered is example 248, lacking the publisher's paper wrappers, bound in early, finely woven parsley cloth boards with the title stamped in gold leaf on the spine, page edges rolled in gold leaf, the interior fresh as if unopened, a few plates with intrinsic trace-light toning in margins. CONDITION DETAIL: Plates: Nearly Fine; some with trace-light toning in margins. Text Pages: Fine. Interleaf Guards: Fine. Lacks publisher's paper wrappers. Boards: Nearly Fine; a few trace rubs, a few instances of trace soiling, the crown with 2 light white spots. Gilt: Fine. Binding: spine slanted: joints and hinges fine: 1 signature with a slight crack. SIZE: Royal Quarto, 292 x 228 mm (11.5 x 8.96 inches). PAGINATION: Confirmed complete, xxiv, preliminaries, including the half-title page, title page printed in red & black letters with heraldic b/w woodcut vignette, preface, and subscriber's list; 116 pages, detailed catalog; 3 pages, exhibitor's list + 118 plates on 102 leaves with bound-in interleaf guards with captions printed in letterpress, some in color, some in facsimile, including a color facsimile of the earliest known Scots grant of arms, 6 color facsimiles of early armorials and grants of arms, and 19 pages of tinted lithographs of playing cards and heraldic devices, including brasses. The exhibition included: assorted grants & genealogies, heraldic seals & armorials, British orders of chivalry and insignia, antiquarian books on heraldry and heraldic book bindings, china, glass, drawings, and stained glass. DELUXE EDITION: plates by S. B. Bolas, London and color lithograph plates by George Waterston and Sons, Edinburgh, limited to 250 numbered examples sold by subscription and 2 for presentation, including to Her Majesty, the Queen, the deluxe catalog of the exhibition held at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh, 6th July to 3rd October 1891.
