Finely bound in near-contemporary full green calf, spine in six compartments with red morocco titles labels to two and gilt scale designs to the other four, gilt and blind rules to sides, marbled endpapers and edges. Bound without title notice slip, half title or advertisements. Frontispiece to each volume (volume 2 frontispiece bound facing p54), engraved title to volume 1, and 38 other plates. Armorial bookplate of John William Pease (1836–1901). Spine a little darkened, joints and corners rubbed, leaves generally fresh. An excellent copy. An attractively bound first edition in book form of the author's last completed novel.
