The Portrait of a Tortoise
London: Chatto and Windus., 1947. Extracted from the journals and letters of Gilbert White with introduction and notes by Sylvia Townsend Warner. Octavo. Original blue/green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, with dust jacket. Frontispiece portrait of Rev. Gilbert White. Cloth slightly dust-soiled, toning to text block, dust jacket slightly tanned and chipped, still an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by Sylvia Townsend Warner on the front free endpaper, "Nancy, from Sylvia, February 1947, with love". It is very possible that the inscription is to Sylvia Townsend Warner's close friend Nancy Cunard, with whom she shared as much a passion for writing as for political activism.
