Notes: Volume 25 includes index to full set. Volume 25 also includes titles, prefaces and contents pages for the binding the full set into the 8 volumes as published by Blackie & Son, London, 1888-1890. Text of these title page reads 'The works of William Shakespeare / edited by Henry Irving and Frank A. Marshall ; with notes and introductions to each play by F.A. Marshall and other Shakespearian scholars, and numerous illustrations by Gordon Browne'. Extremely scarce in this format and condition. Unread copies with unopened pages. Very good copies in the the original paper wrappers; edges somewhat dust-dulled and nicked. Volume numbers stamped in ink on front covers by previous owner. Section of front covers to parts 16, 17, 18 & 24 torn with loss. Remains particularly and surprisingly well-preserved set overall; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered.
