The Love Lyrics and Songs of Proteus by Wilfrid Scawen Blunt with the Love-Sonnets of Proteus by the Same Author Now Reprinted by Their Full Text with Many Sonnets Omitted from the Earlier Editions
Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1892. Hard Cover. Very Good+. Hard Cover. 1 of 300 copies. This was the third book issued by the Press. It had an interesting publishing history, as is documented in Peterson's Bibliography of the Kelmscott Press (A3). Early in the process, Blunt decided that he wanted red decorated initials, which would not have been Morris's choice. More serious was the inclusion but then the suppression of a poem titled "Natalia's Resurrection." Blunt and Margaret Talbot had recently concluded an affair, and she desperately wanted the poem unpublished because it alluded to the affair. The result was the cancellation of eighteen pages of type and a delay in the book's completion. The finished work is a beautiful book, with the bright decorated initials and lovely floral borders of the first page. Printed in Golden type on Flower paper. Bound in original stiff vellum with four silk ties and title in gilt to spine. Very good with some darkening to spine, soiling to covers and discoloration to the foot of the front board. Save for light browning to untrimmed fore-edges, the interior is in near fine condition, with unopened pages. 251 pages. PRI/032813.
