Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1859 - 3 volumes, octavo (194 x 121 mm). Early 20th-century tan half morocco by Birdsall & Son, Northampton, raised bands to spines, blue morocco labels, compartments decorated in gilt, blue cloth sides with a double gilt rule, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Bookplate of Sir George John Armytage, 6th Baronet (1842-1918) to front pastedowns. Extremities a little rubbed, pale spotting to prelims, otherwise an excellent copy. First edition of the author's first novel, "which brought her instant fame on its publication in February 1859. Dickens admired it (and guessed the author was a woman); Elizabeth Gaskell was flattered to be asked if she had written it" (ODNB). Parrish pp. 12-4, Sadleir 812. [Attributes: First Edition]
