Indigenous Flowers of the Hawaiian Islands
pp.44 plus 44 fine chromolithographed plates by the author. In original gilt decorated boards. Some marks on covers. Spine re-laid and skilful repairs to bottom corner of rear board. Corners of boards were repaired to same standard at the same time and the internal hinges (and binding overall) strengthened. Title page with a little foxing and plate one with a few fine spots (maybe paint) all other plates are generally very clean with some of the earlier ones with finger marks to borders. Bottom edges of boards rubbed. Overall a very good copy of this scarce book. Folio. Isabella Simpson was born in Scotland. She spent some of her life in New Zealand and after marrying moved to Hawaii. From an early age she showed artistic promise and painted flowers both in New Zealand and later in Hawaii. This was the first book to illustrate flowers from Hawaii in colour. Scarce.
