History of the Sandwich Islands
Lahainaluna,: Mission Seminary,, 1843.. Octavo, with a folding frontispiece map; two library stamps on title-page; a very good copy in the original brown blind-stamped cloth. The first locally-produced study of the Hawaiian Islands and their history, this important early printing from the first press of the Hawaiian missionaries at Lahaina on Maui is 'one of the most important documents of its time' (Forbes).'This is the first account of the Sandwich Islands published locally. The account of Cook's visit and his death differs only in minor details from that given in his earlier work [i.e. the History and General Views published in New York in 1839 - a much more familiar book on the market]...' (Holmes). This is the form in which the book is most often seen with the folding chart present, and with the Honolulu printing of the appendix (see Forbes for details of the two versions of the appendix). A very small number of copies of the book (issued later than the others) contain an extra series of four views of the islands, while some copies issued early do not contain the chart. Our description of this copy of the book in our catalogue of the Parsons collection was in error: the physical description wrongly stated that the four engravings were present.Forbes, 'Hawaiian National Bibliography', 1383; 'Hawaii One Hundred', 66; Hill, 476; Holmes, 89.
