The Sheltering Sky
New York: New Directions, 1949. First American Edition. First Printing. Octavo (21cm); tan cloth boards, stamped in blue and black on spine; dustjacket; 318pp. Faint paper-clip stain to first two leaves; ink hand-stamp of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studios to both front endpapers, else a tight, square, Near Fine copy. The original Alvin Lustig dustwrapper is price-clipped, with old adhesive paper reinforcement along upper edge verso and with front flap partially separated at fold; Very Good. In later custom-made blue cloth slipcase. & & A presentable example which, despite flaws, shows little of the usual toning or soiling to the jacket. Given the internal evidence, we assume this to have been an early (possibly review) copy provided to Metro Goldwyn Mayer in anticipation of an early movie project (obviously never produced). In the end, it took until Bernardo Bertolucci's 1991 epic (produced by Warner Brothers Studios) for the book to be adapted to film.
