Eikon Basilike [in Greek]. The pourtraicture of His Sacred Majesty in his solitudes and sufferings
London: printed by R. Norton for Richard Royston, bookseller to His most Sacred Majesty, MDCLXXXI [1681]. Sheep. Near Fine+. 8vo: [16],256 (p. 186 misnumbered 860)pp, with 2 copper-engraved portraits, including the frontispiece by R. White. First two words of title in Greek characters. Period sheep, boards framed in blind with a double fillet, flat spine with recent red morocco lettering piece gilt. Scuffed and rubbed, but otherwise an excellent copy, the binding tight, text fine, plates in deep, rich impressions. Provenance: early ownership signature to front fly leaf of John Eames (perhaps the tutor [1686–1744] and fellow of the Royal Society, sponsored by Newton), dated 1709, with the intriguing inscription: "Let my Repentance be my Recovery as my great Sins have been my Ruin." Wing (CD-ROM, 1996), E311A. Madan, New bibliography of the Eikon Basilike, 66. ESTC Citation No. R204383. Supposed spiritual autobiography of Charles I, first published ten days after the king was beheaded by Parliament in the aftermath of the English civil war, but according to Madan (pp. 125-33) it was written, in the form of a diary, by John Gauden, who probably included some authentic writings of the king. The book combines prayers urging forgiveness of Charles's executioners with a justification of royalty, making it a masterstroke of Royalist propoganda. The poem Majesty in Misery, included in this edition, was first printed with the 1676 edition of Perinchief's Life of King Charles and is said to have been composed by the King at Carisbrooke.
