The Holy Bible, Ornamented with engravings by James Fittler from elebrated pictures by old masters
A magnificent copy, of one of the most beautiful 18th century English Bibles, bound by C. Hering. 1795. London. Thomas Bensley. Two thick volumes in 4to (316 mm x 248 mm). Complete copy with 74 plates and two frontispieces. A most attractive slightly later English ?grain-long? red morocco gilt, signed by Hering, spine in compartments, lettered and tooled in gilt, boards with gilt fillets forming rectangles and with corner pieces, edges gilt, inner dentelle gilt, silk endpapers, magnificent binding, only slightly rubbed in hinges and corners, else fine. Generally remarkably fresh and clean, only a little offsetting to folios facing plates, a few foxing spots, else excellent. First edition illustrated by James Fittler. A profusely illustrated Bible; with 74 plates and two frontispieces, engraved by Fittler after Ryley, Van Dyck, Correggio, Rubens, Durer, Rivera, Coypel, Smirke, Rosso, Cortona, amongst many others. Certainly one of the most beautiful Bibles produced in England in the 18th century. The binding is signed by the foremost English binder of the 19th century, with his ticket on the reverse of the front endpaper. Several divisional titles, large paper copy, text in two columns, with excellent distribution of the text and beautiful typography. Misprint in Mark 7:27 ?Let the children first be killed? instead of ?filled?. Herbet, 1394.
