Tri-Nitro-glycerin, as Applied in the Hoosac Tunnel Submarine Blasting, Etc. Etc. Etc
North Adams: James T. Robinson & Son Printers and Binders, 1872. Second Edition. Hard Cover. Good. [1 blank], [ 1 frontis portrait], [6], [tipped in "Second edition" note], [3]-97, [1-ad] pages. The whole illustrated by 8 mounted albumen stereoviews and 2 mounted albumen photographs plus 6 full page drawings/woodcuts. Publisher's brick stiff paper boards with black titles. Remnants of small round label to spine panel. Corner tips worn. INSCRIBED (presumably in the hand of author Mowbray) to collector Jahn Dewitte Miller on the front flyleaf. "J DeWitt Miller Esq Fort Edward NY with the compliments of the author GM Mowbray" and further "Recd Oct 17 1872 J DeWitt Miller" in another hand beneath. We note that the frontispiece facsimile signature and the inscription signature do not match, so this may be secretarial - we have not been able to ascertain this for certain thus far. Pages browned, some approaching brittle (one leaf detached pp 43/44). Bookseller/binder ticket on front pastedown. The Second (and Best) edition. The title page, copyright page, and text is the same between the 2 editions. The first edition has only 8 images and the second edition presented here has 10 mounted albumens, many new or update from the first edition images. It is interesting to note that the stereoviews in this edition are by H.D. Ward, a North Adams phtographer, and all are captioned. The first edition does not have captioned stereoviews and they are apparently by photographer L Daft. A genuine rarity in presentation, (the only other copy we're aware of sold at the Koslov sale at Christies in 1996), and worthy of collecting just based on the stereoviews alone.
