Beyrouth : Imprimerie Catholique. 1939. Paperback. 1st Edition. Original Wrappers. 8vo. 48, [4] pages ; 25 cm. Includes 4 pages of plates : illustrations, maps, and plans. The first published work on the historic Dura-Europos synagogue, recently destroyed by ISIS, published in the Middle East. “The Dura-Europos synagogue (or ‘Dura Europas', ‘Dura Europos' etc. ) is an ancient synagogue uncovered at Dura-Europos, Syria, in 1932. The last phase of construction was dated by an Aramaic inscription to 244 CE, making it one of the oldest synagogues in the world. It is unique among the many ancient synagogues that have emerged from archaeological digs as the structure was preserved virtually intact, and it had extensive figurative wall-paintings, which came as a considerable surprise to scholars. These paintings are now displayed in the National Museum of Damascus… In the Syrian Civil War, the site was occupied by ISIL, and what was left there appears to have been destroyed. ” (Wikipedia, 2017) SUBJECT(S) : Synagogues -- Syria -- Dura. Some edge wear to wrappers and front end page, with corners folded. Otherwise about very good condition. (ART-26-12) .
