Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1605 – 1689) was a French diamond merchant, traveller and pioneer of diamond trade with India, known for travels through Persia. Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1676) became a very well known and popular work. Tavernier, a private individual and merchant travelling at his own expense, covered according to his own account, 180,000 miles (290,000 km) over the course of forty years and six voyages. Though he is best known for the discovery and sale of the 118-carat blue diamond that he subsequently sold to Louis XIV of France in 1668, his writings show that he was a keen observer of his time as well as a remarkable cultural anthropologist, studying the history, politics, religions and cultures of the countries that he visited. He describes Hinduism, the history of the Moghul empire and the practices of the Ottoman court, the trade in precious stones in India. See Atabey, Volume II, 1201; Howgego, Encyclopaedia of Exploration to 1800, T14; Sinkankas, Gemology, Volume II, 6505. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING. POSTAGE AT COST.
