Especially within the Province of Munster under the Government of Sir George Carew and compiled by his Direction and Appointment. Edited and with an Introduction and Notes by Standish O'Grady. With Portraits, Maps and Plans.
Limited Edition. This copy is 91/500. Two Volumes. London, Downey & Co., 1896. 22 x 15 cm. Vol.1: xxii, 302 pages with a frontispiece and 14 illustrations/maps (complete). / Vol.2: xi, 357 pages with a frontispiece and eight illustrations / maps (complete). Original red quarter calf over red cloth boards. Marbled end papers. Top edge gilt. Fore and bottom edge deckle. Very good condition. Boards, corners and spine rubbed and bumped. Some losses to the top of the spines. Spines faded and worn. Edges dust dulled. Joints starting to open, but binding sound. Internally mildly age darkened and foxed, mainly to end papers. Otherwise a very clean and complete copy. From the library of Irish publisher Edmund Downey, London and Waterford. Not signed. Writer and publisher Edmund Downey was born in Waterford in 1856. After working as an editor in the London based 'Tinsley's Magazine' he was involved in various London publishing companies in the late 20th century (Downey & Co.). In 1896 Downey published this two-volume limited Edition of the Pacata Hibernia at his publishing house; Downey & Co in London. After the first Edition, printed in 1633 and two consequent Editions by the Hibernia Company (1810 and 1821), this would have been the fourth Edition of the Pacata Hibernia. In 1906 he became the proprietor and editor of the Waterford News. Downey would also write around twenty books which included the Story of Waterford and a two-volume biography of Charles Lever. Some of his books were published under pseudonyms. Downey died in 1937.
