1745. Very Good. [DEFOE, Daniel]. THE COMPLETE ENGLISH TRADESMAN: Directing him in the several parts and progressions of trade, from his first entring upon business, to his leaving off. Particularly with regard to diligence, over- trading, diversions, expensive living, suretyship, ... With useful generals in trade, describing the principles and foundations of the home trade of Great Britain: With tables of the British manufactures, product, shipping, land-carriage, importation, home-consumption, &c. Calculated for the use of all our inland tradesmen, as well in the city as country. London: Printed for J. Rivington, 1745. Fifth edition, "with very great alterations and improvements." Two 12mo. volumes: xvi,380,[4]; viii,345,[3] pp. The unnumbered pages at the end of each volume are publisher's advertisements. Modern brown cloth bindings, each with a gilt- stamped lettering piece on spine. Contemporary ink ownership ("Wm. John Banner's Book 1750") in volume 2. This is a sound and very good copy despite some shallow chipping (not affecting text) along the fore-edge of the first few leaves in Volume 1 and several dust-soiled pages and some foxing in margins of Volume 2. First published as a single volume in 1726, this edition includes many changes made after Defoe's death in 1731. (Kress 8150; CBEL II 508).
