The Princess Casamassima.
London Macmillan and Co 1886 - First edition, 8vo, [one of 750 copies], 2pp. publisher's advertisements at end of vol. II & III, green endpapers, labels of Exeter bookbinder A. L. Noake on upper pastedowns, small stamps of same on half-titles, hinges repaired, original blue-green fine-bead cloth, covers with black fillet borders, spines lettered in gilt, expert, minor repairs to cloth of spines, a few gatherings crudely opened, further slight wear to edges and corners of bindings, minor marks to covers, but overall an attractive copy, preserved in matching quarter morocco folding box. A superior set of the Henry James' ninth novel, often considered a companion piece to The Bostonians (1886) and a seemingly unusual work in the author's canon, both for its tackling of a relatively violent theme & plot-line and also for its featuring of a recurring character, Christina Light, the mademoiselle fatale of Roderick Hudson (1875), who was married off by her mother at the end of that novel to the Italian Prince Casamassima. The chief protagonist is London bookbinder, Hyacinth Robinson, a young and slightly naive man who becomes involved in radical socialist politics and a terrorist assassination plot, set against a backdrop of London, France and Italy. Edel & Laurence A29a; Sadleir 1282; Wolff 3576 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
