American Solider Photo Album
Okinawa 1957 - Oblong photo album measuring 11" x 15". Black lacquer over wooden boards accented with inlaid pieces of mother of pearl appliques, and some hand-painted details, showing a mountain and two tradition-style Japanese buildings beside a body of water; album tied with silk cords. Very good plus with chips and tears. A collection of 73 photographs and snapshots of American soldiers stationed in Okinawa, at Sobe camp in the 1950's. The majority of the assemblage are black and white photos measuring 3.5" x 5" with some 3.5" x 2.25", two 8"x10", and a 5.5" x 14" group photo. All images are clear, a few have captions either in the margins or on the verso of the photo. The group photo is laid in at the rear of the album and is creased, with one section at the right margin torn away, causing minor loss. The album depicts soldiers on duty, a work in the machine shops, views of the base camp, "clowning in the China Sea," playing baseball and basketball, along with locals and town businesses. A picture of a camp sign indicates the soldier/photographer was stationed at Sobe Area, Rycom Gen. Depot, 65th Engineer Heavy Shop Company, 596th Engineer Maintenance Company, 526th Engineer Maintenance Department." A dozen of the photos show both African American and white soldiers sharing the basketball court, work duties, and the baseball field. One of the 8" x 10" photos shows a group of black and white soldiers sharing a traditional meal, seated on the floor around a table, all diligently employing their chopsticks. A caption on one of the baseball game photos identities it as being between the Sobe Engineers and the Magushaki [Hagushaki?] bombers, a Japanese team, at Ishikawa Beach. The final picture of the group is taken in front of a U.S. Army plane, dated 1957 and personalized, "Good Luck Lt. Bass," and is signed by seven men.
