Postcard: "Musu darbu mums pašiem" ("Our work to ourselves")
[Riga], 1920. Original postcard, ca. 1919-1920; 13.8 × 8.8 cm. Used, with postal stamp dated May 1921. Corners lightly creased; still good or better. Postcard featuring a vivid expressionist drawing by the Latvian modernist painter and graphic artist Jekabs Kazaks (1895-1920), who was instrumental in bringing international creative trends to the Latvian capital and served as the chairman of the Riga Artists' Group (Rigas Makslinieku Grupa, formed 1920, and initially known as the Group of Expressionists), until his tragic early death the same year. In 1922, the organization issued a little memorial exhibit catalog, about which James Fraser notes: "This [...] exhibition from March 26 to April 14, 1922, celebrated one of the key figures in the establishment of the modern tradition in Latvian art, despite his untimely death. 249 pieces covering the years 1915 to 1920--essentially Kazaks' entire oeuvre--was shown. Dace Lamberga has provided the most significant assessment of Kazaks in her monograph, Jekabs Kazaks (Riga: Neputns, 2007)" (Fraser p. 169). Lamberga notes that "Kazaks's paintings that depict the tragic destiny of World War I refugees and Latvian riflemen reveal the general view of his age like in a mirror" (p.30). This drawing similar to a drawing featured on p. 28 of Lamberga's monograph ("To the People's Higher School").
