Memoirs of Richard Lovell Edgeworth, Esq. Begun by Himself and Concluded by his Daughter, Maria Edgeworth
London: Printed for R Hunter, Successor to Mr. Johnson and Baldwin, Cradock and Joy, 1820 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. [4] [1] pp 2-392 A single volume of the Memoirs of Richard Lovell Edgeworth, inscribed by the author's novelist daughter, Maria. The memoirs had a complicated genesis and Maria Edgeworth is credited with completing, editing and posthumously publishing her father's memoirs. She has written on the title page: 'Mrs Beaufort from Maria Edgeworth' in brown ink, using her distinctive forward-sloping cursive hand. More than twenty years before the publication of this book, in 1798, Richard Lovell Edgeworth married for a third time, Frances-Anne Beaufort, from whose family 'Mrs Beaufort' seems likely to originate. In addition to the inscription there is a single manuscript correction in a miniscule printed hand at page 44. Edgeworth is describing the way Mr Deane introduced him to mathematical instruments and states that 'he explained to me the bellows of an organ pipe and many other contrivances.' The annotator has amended this in the same ink as used on the title page to: 'he explained to me the bellows and construction of an organ, and many other mechanical contrivances.' The privileged information contained within the correction strongly suggests it to be Maria Edgeworth's handiwork even if the tiny printed hand is not evidence enough of itself. The binding has recently been restored using light green paper over the original boards with a spine label imitating the original label which is laid in. Internally the text is clean; the page edges have not been trimmed. Even without his remarkable daughter Richard Lovell Edgeworth is a significant figure as inventor and writer; these memoirs are among the most entertaining written in the period.
