Boston & New York: Printed by arrangement with George Barrie's Sons, The Jefferson Press, 1902 - 20 volumes, octavo. Finely bound in full burgundy morocco, one blue and one black label, gilt titles and decoration to spine, raised bands, gilt decorative border to boards, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt others untrimmed. A beautifully bound set in fine condition. Photogravure frontispiece printed on Japanese vellum. A splendid piece of American limited edition publishing for the novels of George Sand, real name Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin (1804–1876), who is also remembered for her well publicized romantic affairs with a number of artists, including the composer and pianist Frédéric Chopin and the writer Alfred de Musset. The English translations are by George Burnham Ives (1856–1930), who took up translation work after a lengthy prison sentence for embezzlement and forgery. The edition was first published by George Barrie in 1900.
