Extremities of spine a little frayed; cloth somewhat faded, front inner hinge cracking slightly, otherwise a good copy. Second edition, slightly revised from the first edition of 1864. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Charles Nordhoff Esq with the regards of William Cullen Bryant. Nov. 30. 1869--." Charles Nordhoff (1830-1901), the Prussian-born journalist and author, wrote several works based on his youthful experiences as an American sailor, as well as guidebooks and the pioneering work, THE COMMUNISTIC SOCIETIES OF THE UNITED STATES. He was a close friend of Bryant and served with him on the editorial staff of the NEW YORK EVENING POST. BAL 1706.
