"The Peking Version was the first major attempt to translate the New testament into Mandarin and as such it was even compared by some to the Authorized Version in England or the Luther Bible in Germany" (Bible in China, Zetzsche, 1999). The Peking Committee Bible was translated by five missionaries and their Chinese co-laborers at the end of the 19th century. Peking version is the version was produced at a time when Mandarin Chinese was not yet the lingua franca of China. In fact in the mid to late 1800s, Mandarin Chinese was a northern Chinese dialect used mostly by officials. Samuel Isaac Jacob Schereschewsky would single handily translate the Old Testament in 1874 and the complete bible would be printed in 1878.
