War and Peace
London: The Folio Society, 2006. Leather Bound. Fine. 1430 p. Hundreds of small line drawings by Feliks Topolski. 1750 numbered copies of which this is number 1708. Reprint of the first Folio society edition of 1971. Brown leather with gold and black impressing. In black slipcase with gold lettering. An attractive edition of one of the world's longest novels, first published in book form in 1869. Tolstoy's masterpiece portrays events leading up to the French invasion of Russia as seen through the eyes of five Russian aristocratic families. Tolstoy himself, somewhat enigmatically, said of his tome that it was "not a novel, even less is it a poem, and still less an historical chronicle." Whatever words one chooses to describe it, "War and Peace" remains a great literary achievement and one of the best books of all time. This box set includes a 12-page essay leaflet by John Bayley.
