The Life of Sir Ernest Shackleton.
London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1923 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine and front board lettered and decorated in gilt, bottom edge untrimmed. Spine rolled, extremities lightly rubbed, lower outer corner of front board bumped, edges foxed, free endpapers browned, light spotting to prelims and final leaves. A very good copy. Photographic frontispiece, title page printed in blue and black, 19 further plates, mainly from photographs, 4 sketch-maps to the text. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy of "the first comprehensive biography of the great explorer, by the great Antarctic historian" (Rosove), inscribed by the author "Lt. Col. R. G. Munn, a memento of many Sunday mornings from Hugh Robert Mill, April 1923" on the front free endpaper. Mill (1861-1950), a distinguished geographer, was "an acknowledged expert on Antarctic exploration though he had never been to polar regions, and became a friend, adviser, and inspirer of many explorers, as well as a storehouse of information" (ODNB). He met Shackleton on the Discovery expedition (1901–4), which he accompanied as far as Madeira as instructor in meteorological and oceanographic observation. "Uncommon" (Rosove).
