CALCUTTA, COLOMBO, CAIRO, NAPLES, MARSEILLES, LONDON & NEW YORK The text was written by [James K. Steele.] This lovely pamphlet was most likely given to new passengers boarding any one of the many N.Y.K. [Nippon Yusen Kaisha] ships that plied the Atlantic and Pacific oceans as a starting point for an "Around The World Voyage." This was all the "rage" during the 1920-30 for the wealthy elite of America & Europe, to embark on a 2-3 month leisurely 'shopping' voyage. This came to an abrupt halt in 19376, when Japan was designated an 'aggressor' in China, Korea, Manchuria & S.E. Asia. Shortly thereafter World War II started. This pamphlet, was published for Nippon Yusen Kaisha, a passenger steamship line. This is a guide to the ports of call for passengers. It begins with the voyage beginning in Los Angeles or San Francisco, then out to Honolulu, Yokohama, Kyoto, Korea, Peking, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Calcutta, Colombo, Cairo, Naples, Marseilles and London. With passenger price fair chart, list of services and routes, side trips, around the world fares, with color hemispheric map of the route. SUPERB AND LOVELY ART WORK BY DAN SWEENEY: The covers of this pamphlet and 17 other color plates inside were all drawn and designed in full color by Dan Sweeney. Each color illustration is signed by Sweeney in the plate. This brochure also shows the prices for "Around World Fares" at $910,, guide to passenger services. An excellent guide to the places visited, what sites to visit, shopping guide and insights to famous products. This is a treasure trove guiding passengers to some of the out-of-way places, fascinating essay on shopping, small shops, bazaars, and on how to bargain with local sellers. WHO THE ARTIST, DAN SWEENEY [1888-1958]: DAN SWEENEY: BOOK ILLUSTRATOR & HOTEL LUGGAGE LABEL ARTISTS: Sweeney was an American artist. He was a well-known book illustrator, as well as a recognized "art deco" artist, who also designed art nouveau hotel luggage labels, he worked 1920-1930's. There are a substantial number of books illustrated by Sweeney. Sweeney was born in 1880 in Sacramento, California. Details of his early years are unknown, but he must have started illustrating around the turn of the century. By 1914 he was already sufficiently known to be hired to illustrate a book but most of his work as a book illustrator seems to have been done in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Sweeney was a remarkable illustrator who, signed his work and in his lifetime obtained enough recognition to be mentioned today in a few "Who is who in Art" books. Most of Sweeney's illustrations were done for newspapers and magazines as the San Francisco Chronicle, Collier's, Overboard Monthly, World Travelers and other books. He also did theater and travel posters and other illustrations. He was considered a specialist in western and marine subjects. DAN SWEENY HOTEL LUGGAGE LABEL DESIGNER: How Sweeney came to design hotel luggage labels. Apparently his illustrations of exotic scenes caught the eye of a manager of the Hong-Kong & Shanghai Hotels concern and he was commissioned to design labels for the several hotels of the group in Hong-Kong, Shanghai and Peking. His commission may have been received during a trip to the Orient because he did labels for a number of other Asian hotels, all datable to a short period in the late 1920s. We know of 11 labels signed by Dan Sweeney for the following hotels: Hong-Kong Hotel; The Peak Hotel, HK; Peninsula Hotel, HK; Repulse Bay Hotel, HK; Grand Hotel des Wagons-Lites, Peking; Astor House, Shanghai; Majestic Hotel, Shanghai; Palace Hotel, Shanghai; Grand Hotel Metropole, Hanoi; Continental Palace Hotel, Saigon; and Manila Hotel. They all share the same general dimensions (9 x 14 cm), they all have the name of the hotel in a serifed type font of the Times News Roman family, and they are all printed by the four-color process on a variety of papers including a granular sort that offers the best color rendition. The same illustrations used for labels were used in publicity folders, cards (the same size as labels but printed on heavier stock) and postcards. Sweeney died in 1958 but his fine labels remain. In their time they were amidst the finest on travelers' luggage and because of their appeal were widely imitated [e g: Gloucester Hotel in Hong Kong, Saigon Palace Hotel, and several others]. Some of these labels may even stem from original designs by Dan Sweeney for these same hotels. CONDITION: The pamphlet is in the original pictorial wrappers, with a minor bit of usual edge wear for an item more than 88 years old. There are a few minor rubs to the spine, else a solid, very clean and firm copy. N.Y.K.
