Lieder-Buch des Philadelphia Schützen-Vereins
Philadelphia: Charles Reen, 1871. First Edition. Hardcover. A charming and extremely uncommon songbook, issued one year after the incorporation (but some 25 years after the initial founding) of the Philadelphia Schützen-Verein [i.e., "Rifle Club"]. Schützen-Vereine were a German-American social and fraternal phenomenon which sprung up in the wake of mass German immigration to America in the 1840s; like their cousins the "musik-verein" and the "turn-verein," these clubs served as both an outlet for recreational activities - in this case marksmanship and hunting-lore - and a meeting-place for the discussion of social and political ideas pertinent to the German-American community. The Philadelphia Schützen-Verein was nominally founded in 1846, but not incorporated until 1870, when its Constitution and By-Laws were published (Constitution und Neben-Gesetze des Philadelphia Schützen-Vereins: gegründet den 20sten November 1846. Phil: Ketterlinus, 1870). The association's clubhouse and shooting-range were located near Tabor Station, at the edge of the Olney neighborhood of Philadelphia, and remained active at least through the Second World War. The current work contains some forty songs, divided into two categories (Waidmanns-Lieder (hunting songs) and Soldaten und Volks Lieder (military and patriotic songs); the latter section includes printings, in English, of "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "Hail Columbia," and "O Columbia the Gem of the Ocean." OCLC notes only one location (German Society of PA); the aforementioned Constitution appears to be the only other extant publication of the society. 16mo (13cm). Publisher's cloth boards, titled in gilt with blind rules to front and rear covers; salmon endpapers; 48pp. Engraved title page design, head- and tail-pieces. Cloth spotted, front hinge thinly cracked at gutter, else a tight, complete copy in the original binding, about Very Good. Text entirely in German but for three pages (see note below).
