A Yankee At The Court of King Arthur
London: Chatto and Windus, 1889.. FIRST EDITION, preceding the US first. Crown Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.xvi; 526; [1], colophon; [1], blank; 32, catalogue dated October 1889. Illustrated with 220 engravings by Dan Beard, including a full-page frontispiece. Full deep-red oasis morocco, spine gilt-lettered in six compartments with raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, publisher's original cloth bound in at rear. Owner name to half-title otherwise internally clean, exterior unmarked. A near fine copy in an attractive recent leather binding. Frequently presented as a rollicking adventure story, where a contemporary American is thrown back in time to the mythic court of King Arthur, Twain's novel is actually a biting satirical attack on established values of class privilege and entrenched social hierarchies. In this it resembles Swift's Gulliver's Travels, and Beard's excellent illustrations make the satiric intent clear. A fun read, and a good way to introduce children to republican sentiments worthy of Thomas Paine.
