A Leaf from the Published Work of Nicolas Jenson, Printer 1472
Placerville, CA: Blackwood Press, 1985. Quarto. (10)pp. One of 73 copies. This leaf originates from Jenson's printing of Macrobius' "Saturnalia", a philosophical treatise in the style of a symposium, much in the manner of Plato's "Symposium" and Aulus Gellius's "Noctes Atticae". The "Saturnalia" is particulary significant because of its citations of facts and opinions appearing in earlier, often lost, works. The leaf presented here cites Sallust's "Histories" (now fragmentary), Masurius's "Calendar" (now lost), Verrius Flaccus's "Saturn" (lost), and Julius Modestus's "On Rest Days" (lost), among many others. These quotations are employed by the guests of the symposium in order to analyze points from as many angles as possible, often making the text an exercise in comparative linguistics, religion, and philosophy. This leaf begins with a thorough discussion of the terminology used to define particular times of day, and ends with an examination of the use of the nominative form of "Saturnalia" over the genitive "Saturnaliorum". The leaf is a fine example of Jenson's typographic style, with a brief example of his Greek type on the recto. Though Jenson never issues a volume entirely in Greek, he was the first to use Greek characters in Venetian books. His typefaces influenced William Morris, Cobden-Sanderson of the Doves Press, Emery Walker, and Bruce Rogers. The leaf is moderately annotated with manicules on recto and verso and extensive marginal notes in Latin. A pencil marking at the top left of the recto identifies the leaf as "51". The leaf is preceded by a short biography of Jenson and general description by Edmund E. Simpson. In blue wrappers, toning to extremities and bumps to corners, with leaf in fine condition.
