To Have and Have Not
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1937. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. A wonderful Association copy. WARMLY INSCRIBED BY ERNEST HEMINGWAY'S LEGENDARY PUBLISHER CHARLES SCRIBNER TO AUTOMOBILE TITAN WALTER CHRYSLER on the front free endpaper ("For Mr. Walter (Donald Budge) Chrysler--Charlie"). A crisp, very well-preserved copy to boot of the 1937 1st edition (with both the letter 'A' and the Scribner colophon on the copyright page). Tight and Near Fine in its dark cloth, with bright, completely unflecked gilt-lettering along the front panel and spine, and with Walter Chrysler's armorial leather bookplate at the front pastedown (nicely establishing provenance). And in an impressive, price-intact ("$2.50"), VG+ to Near Fine dustjacket, with just a touch of light rubbing to the spine and a bit of light creasing at the front flap and along the rear flap-fold. Octavo, jacket design by Neely and author photograph at the rear taken by Joris Ivens at the front in Spain. Also includes a near-pristine custom slipcase, in its russet cloth.
