Creator Philip Nowlan and cartoonist Dick Calkins developed the illustrated "Buck Rogers" character as a comic strip; it became so successful it was later adapted to film and television, eventually becoming an important part of American popular culture. The development of the technology necessary for space travel was happening at this time, and Buck Rogers and his adventures made many Americans comfortable with the idea of space travel. This pop-up book from 1935 features the characters Buddy Deering and Allura of Mars, who "became supreme monarchs of the planet Venus" (quote from story).
