Kyoto 1960's. Kyoto Hanga In. Single woodblock color print, 26.8 x 40 cm., margins included pristine, as new, lightly mounted on a mat, superb color, flawless. Utamaro Kitagawa, (1750 -1806), a Japanese Woodblock reprint, hand woodblock printed in full color, a stunning copy of the original. THE SUBJECT: This is a lovely and tender print, showing a Beijin [Japanese beauty], a prostitute, holding a fan. THE TITLE SERIES: "Nangoku Bijin Awase:" "Series of Southern Beauties." In this case, "Nangoku" means Tosa, present-day Kochi Prefecture, in Shikoku island. Again, this series shows the stunning prostitutes of the period. FAN READING: The text reads: "Tohji zense-i Bijin Soro-e, Echizen-ya na-i Morokoshi": this means "Series of present-day beauties series in Morokoshi [city], at Echizen-ya" a house of prostitution. CONDITION: The work is pristine, no issues. Printed with the rare graffrage on the inner Kimono, a printing technique using no ink, just the impression to look like textured cloth. The top edge is deckled. Flawless ! THE CARVER/PRINTER: This print was expertly carved by Harada Kame and superbly printed by Ito Satoshi. WHO WAS UTAMARO: KITAGAWA Utamaro [1754-1806], was the son and pupil of Toriyama Sekiyen, one of the leading artists of the Ukiyo-E School. The foremost painter of women. He had several pupils and innumerable imitators and forgers of his name, among the latter were Toyokuni and more particularly Yeizan. Extracted from Stewart below. REFERENCES: STEWART, Basil.
