London, printed for Giles Calvert at the Black-Spread-Eagle at West-end of Pauls, 1655. Containing many Excellent and Choice Secrets, Experiments, and Discoveries for attaining of National and Private Profits and Riches. FIRST EDITION IN 2 PARTS, THE FIRST PART ON BEES IS COMPLETE, THE SECOND PART ON SILK WORMS LACKS TITLE PAGE AND 18 PAGES. Small 4to, approximately 185 x 140 mm, 7½ x 5 inches, 3 illustrations, 1 engraved and 2 woodcuts, pages: [4], 1-62 plus 1 leaf of "Some writers of Bees extant", followed by pages 19-40 on Silk Worms of Virginia, bound in full contemporary brown panelled sheep, neatly rebacked. Covers slightly scuffed, tips of corners neatly repaired, lower cover has a pale stain, title page stained at outer and lower margins and a little dusty, neat narrow repair to blank edge of title page to strengthen and neat repair to lower corner of title page, following page has a neat small repair to lower margin, hardly noticeable, top margins of pages 25-62 have worm tracks neatly repaired, not affecting text, minuscule worming to top outer margins, hardly visible, occasional small pale brown stain, pastedowns and endpapers age-browned and dusty, otherwise a very good copy. The Reformed Commonwealth gives the earliest known description of the octagonal three-storeyed hive, with a drawing of it by Christopher Wren. Published during the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell, the title was understandably called the Reformed Commonwealth of Bees.
