The Works of Edgar Allan Poe. [including Tales of Mystery and Imagination].
London: Published by J. Shiells and Co., 1895.. [Strange Tales]. FINELY BOUND. Eight volumes. Octavo (18 x 12cm). With 24 fine photogravure plates. Contemporary dark red half calf with two maroon title labels, gilt raised bands and gilt to spines. Marbled boards and end papers; top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Light wear to spines and fore-edges, some chipping and gouging to spines; more so to volume I. A little foxing to edges. Very good. A seminal figure in the development of science fiction and the detective story, Poe exerted a great influence on Dostoyevsky, Conan Doyle, Verne, and Baudelaire. This collection of Poe's best stories contains all the terrifying and bewildering tales that characterise his work, as well as the Gothic horror of 'The Pit and the Pendulum' with other similarly weird tales, together with all three of the landmark cases featuring his ground-breaking detective Auguste Dupin. Indeed, the history of the detective story begins with the publication of 'The Murders In the Rue Morgue' (Matthews). He was a writer of genius who was interested in crime, especially violent deaths, cryptograms, and the whole process of logical deduction (Quayle). Poe's mystery of 'The Purloined Letter' is also a prototype of spy stories like those of James Bond. (Haining).
