New York: Doubleday, Page & Co, 1905. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. Rackham, Arthur. First US Trade Edition, quarto size, 65pp., followed by fifty-one tipped in illustrations. The story of Rip Van Winkle has delighted both children and adults since it was first published in 1819. Published numerous times, this version with the lovely (and at the same time frightening) illustrations by Arthur Rackham; in the words of Derek Hudson ("Arthur Rackham, His Life and Work") it "contains some of Rackham's best work". The book begins with the text of the story written by Washington Irving (1783-1859) and is then "re-told" by Rackham through fifty-one of his remarkable illustrations.___DESCRIPTION: Bound in dark green cloth, gilt illustration of Rip Van Winkle on the front cover, gilt lettering on front and spine, textblock edges stained green, dark green endpapers, frontispiece of Rip Van Winkle one of the tipped in illustrations with lettered tissue guard, illustrated title page, first page of the introduction has a lovely vignette at the top of the page of a cobwebbed Van Winkle asleep, decorated initial capital letter at the beginning of the story, the first 57 pages contain the introduction and the text of the story while the last 100 pages are on dark green paper with the other fifty handsome tipped in illustrations, each with lettered tissue guards; quarto size (10.25" by 7.75"), pagination: [viii], 57, followed by the fifty illustrations, each tipped-in.___CONDITION: Volume is almost near fine, with the gilt bright on the front and spine, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the text pages are clean and bright, the illustrations are in fine condition as are all tissue guards, and the volume is free of prior owner markings; some minor wear to the corners and edges, spine is very lightly sunned, and some off-setting to the title page caused by the tissue-guard.
