First Edition. Signed by Author. Dedicated to Edmund Downey, London, Eveleigh Nash & Grayson Limited, 1929. 18 x 12 cm. 255 pages. Original dark blue cloth with gilt titles on spine and front board. Very good condition. Minor shelf wear. Edges dust dulled and foxed. Internally some mild foxing, otherwise very clean. With a dedication on the title page: To Edmund Downey from his old friend Morley Roberts. 11.9.29. From the library of Irish publisher Edmund Downey, London and Waterford. Writer and publisher Edmund Downey was born in Waterford in 1856. After working as an editor in the London based 'Tinsley's Magazine' he was involved in various London publishing companies in the late 20th century (Downey & Co.). In 1906 he became the proprietor and editor of the Waterford News. Downey would also write around twenty books which included the Story of Waterford and a two-volume biography of Charles Lever. Some of his books were published under pseudonyms. Downey died in 1937.
