Jane Eyre An Autobiography Edited by Currer Bell
London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1847. 3 vols., 8vo, (iv), 304; (iv), 304; (iv), 311, (1) pp. half-titles present, lacking advertisements, pp. 260-268 bound out of order, occasional light foxing, far less than usually seen. Crushed green morocco extra by Samblanck-Weckesser, gilt top, triple gilt fillet, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, slipcase. Gilt-tooled leather bookplate in each vol. A lovely and unusually clean copy of this preeminent classic in a fine example of the elegant bindings demanded by early collectors. First edition with all headline and chapter heading issue points per Parrish. Charlotte Brontë's first published work and the most successful of all the Brontë sisters' novels. Published on October 19, 1847, in an edition of just 500 copies, the novel was an immediate success and was reprinted twice the following year. It was swiftly recognized as something new to fiction: an autobiographical, epistolary adventure in the tradition of Robinson Crusoe, but an adventure into interior consciousness, and into the mind of an orphaned, downtrodden woman at that. By itself it created a minor revolution in the art of the novel. It is among the most influential works of fiction of the nineteenth century, a key work of proto-feminism, and the inspiration for innumerable adaptations, retellings, and works of literary criticism. Grolier English Literature 167; Parrish pp.87, 99-155; Smith 2. Wise, I, p.72. Provenance: This copy, bound thus, sold in the French sale at Libbie's, April 23, 1901, lot 149, $150. From the estate of a private collector.
