The Behm Murderers: Trial and Conviction of Rosentine and Moody, for the murder of Abraham Behm; With an Account of All the Executions that Have Taken Place in Dauphin County
Harrisburg, PA, 1874. Softcover. G- (Well-worn cover edges; top cover has torn off and is present; spine material is missing; pages are generally clean; a possible re-binding candidate.). Tan wraps, 56 text pp., plus many ad pages. On the cover: "The Behm Murderers. Trial, Conviction, Confessions and Execution of Rosentine and Moody. Executed at Harrisburg, July 9, 1874, with a full account of All the Executions in Dauphin County since 1797." It's almost difficult to believe that the central Pennsylvanians of the late 19th-century actually paid 25 cents for copies of this booklet, but evidently they did. No National Enquirer existed for them at the time. The main feature here are the details surrounding the murder of cabinet-maker Abraham Behm of Londonderry township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, on November 14, 1873. The murderers were African American men, Lewis Rosentine and John Moody. We can read of the murder, the trial, the sentence, both suspects' confessions, and the execution. No vital piece of information is left untold. Details are also provided for the previous executions of Charles M'Manus and John Hauer (1798); James M'Gowen and James Jamison (1806); James Loudon (1818); Benjamin Stewart (1824); Courtland Charles Johnson (1854), Simon Green (1856), and Henry Hulzinger (1859). The text is accompanied by more than a dozen full-page ads for businesses in the area around the capital city of Harrisburg. Could be of interest to historians and genealogists alike. Please note that this is a copy of the original publication, and not a paperback reprint, e-book, or print-on-demand title. As such, it is rare.
