Pairs Intelligent Design: Made in Nature/Made by Hand Volumes I and II
Santa Barbara, California:: Pamela Zwehl-Burke,, 2008.. Edition of 5. 5 x 5"; Volume I: 19 pages; Volume II: 21 pages. Accordion structure. Digital prints of Prismacolor drawings. Bound with cloth-covered boards. Drawings of pairs of objects - one natural-made and one human-made. Pamela Zwehl-Burke: "Pairs means to tease at the putative split between discovery and invention. Creationists maintain that a Power invented stuff for us to discover (nothing human-made could be as glorious, complex, aesthetically thrilling as that which, um, 'Nature' made). My father posited a 'Great Engineer' (he was himself an engineer, godlike in inventing and problem-solving); I mark a legacy, that which shapes us IS us. Structure, Surface, Function – splendid or mediocre, both 'sources' – human and natural, combining to make and perceive. Most particularly, though, I cherish the narrative that juxtaposition evokes: rose/birthday cake candle; mouseskull/silver locker, jinglebell/sea stone.
