London- Chapman and Hall 1862 - An early edition of North America,the second travel bookof Anthony Trollope, written during the time of the American Civil War. Second edition, published the same year as the first. Illustrated with a fold-out map of North America. Priced to allow for a rebind, arounda 500 book afterwards. Trollope writes to the introduction that 'It has been the ambition of my literary life to write a book about the United States, and I had made up my mind to visit the country with this object before the intestine troubles of the United States Government had commenced. I have not allowed the division among the States and the breaking out of the civil war to interfere with my intention; but I should not have purposely have chosen this period either for my book or for my visit. 'Condition: In contemporary half calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally, both volumes are worn, with all joints being cracked and tender, with both the backstrips lifting, with loss to volume one. Internally, firmly bound and bright, although with some scattered spotting and handling marks. Private library bookplate to the front pastedown of both volumes. Some repairs to the folding map.
