A critical examination of the first principles of geology; in a series of essays. [First edition].
Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown 1819 - London, octavo, iv, [ii], 336 p. and text illustrations. ***CONTENT: George Bellas Greenough (1778-1855) was a pioneering English geologist best known for his geological maps of England and Wales. He was well read and very active in scientific circles, and was co-founder and first president of the Geological Society of London. This volume is his most significant work, in which he reviews several ideas of his predecessors and contemporaries, including: stratification, the figure of the Earth, "formations", the order of succession in rocks, the history of strata (as deduced from their fossil contents), mineral veins, and more. Herein, Greenough was an eloquent critic, but his contemporaries were likewise critical of his refusal to consider the chronologic, stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental value of fossils. He was also skeptical of the concepts of 'stratum' and 'formation' as employed by William Smith. Nevertheless, Greenough was widely respected for his intellect and advocacy in the cause of geological studies. ***CONDITION: This is a VG copy in contemporary 3/4 calf and marbled boards, with a gilt-lettered and decorated backstrip. The covers are sound but rubbed, with erosion to the head and foot of the spine; backstrip gilt worn but legible. Joints and hinges starting but holding, binding very firm. Save for the very occasional bit of foxing, the text pages are near pristine: fresh, clean and bright. The only evidence of previous ownership is the inked signature of Jer[emiah] Van Rensselaer on the title page and his penciled annotations in the text. This is a complete, internally handsome copy of a scarce and classic treatise. BMNH 730. Challinor 92. Ward and Carozzi 951. International shipping will be extra for this book, but only at my cost.
