Hints To Young Painters And The Process of Portrait Painting, as Practiced by The Late THOMAS SULLY
Philadelphia: J.M Stoddart & Co. 1873. Azure blue vellum. 55 pp. Color plate of a painter's pallete which is colored by hand and also the folding chart at p. 14 which is frequently missing. Karpel (I-1351) states "...Describes materials and procedures for portrait painting. Sully's handbook reveals many of the techniques used by himself and his contemporaries, including Allston, West, Leslie and Trumbull, in the preparation of varnishes, canvases and flesh-tones." Slight separation of vellum from board on front cover, still a very desirable book in solid condition. Extremely scarce. The book was reprinted by Faber Birren and Reinhold in 1965. VG-, light soiling.
