Bindings a little rubbed; some light foxing; very good copy.. 2 vols, 12mo, contemporary brown quarter calf, green leather labels, gilt rules and lettering. Half-titles present. Two pages of publisher's terminal ads in volume one. Madame Cottin's first novel, a scandalous epistolary tale about a young woman who is in an arranged marriage with an older man, and subsequently falls uncontrollably in love with a man her age and has an adulterous affair. The griping story, as relayed to Clara's friends in letters, examines taboos, social restrictions and attitudes about love and attachment. Contemporary bookplate on the front paste-down partially removed.
