Harlem Jazz Adventures. A European Baron's Memoir, 1934-1969. Adapted and Edited by Fradley Hamilton Garner.
Lanham, Maryland: Scarecrow Press Inc., 2012 - Octavo. Original pictorial laminated boards. Very good. 16 pages of illustrations. First Edition. This copy signed by the editor and translator on the title page, and additionally signed and inscribed by Rosenkrantz's niece, Bente "Topsy" Rosenkrantz Arendrup, who has written a touching and humorous epilogue to the book: "How lucky I am to have been close to my uncle Timme". Garner, a friend and compatriot of Timme Rosenkrantz, has given lovers of jazz memoirs a real gift in bringing back to life this classic reminiscence, which has been skillfully edited, revised, and expanded from the original long out-of-print Danish publication and other original sources. Garner's lively and sensitive translation tells the colourful tale of a self-described "little layman with a heart that beats for jazz", who in 1934 arrived in New York and promptly dived headlong into the Golden Age of Jazz. Resurfacing as the Jazz Baron (he did in fact have noble blood in his veins) for thirty five years, Rosenkrantz, with talent and boundless enthusiasm, sadly unmatched by the requisite business savvy, donned (and doffed) many hats, working as a jazz journalist, photographer, record producer, talent scout, club owner and more, all the while befriending and rubbing shoulders with the jazz luminaries of the era. A wonderful account of a lost world and a worthy addition to Scarecrow's estimable Studies in Jazz series; includes a personal remembrance by jazz historian Dan Morgenstern, archival photos and a discography by Jorgen Thomsen. One of just 5 copies specially signed and inscribed thus. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
