London: Faber and Faber, 1972 - Octavo. Original paper wrappers, titles to spine and front cover in black Slight rubbing to spine ends, light foxing to covers, crease to joints, an excellent copy. First edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to BBC television producer Ivan Gilman, with an autograph quatrain, on the title page, "Seamus Heaney, for Ivan Gilman, 'From Palace to Starlight, Dublin to Bray, Through the porter-black night: McEldowney's duende!' with good wishes", and additionally inscribed by one of the dedicatees, David Hammond, the Irish singer, filmmaker and broadcaster whose obituary Heaney wrote in 2008, "6th November 1972 – a new song from Ireland, To Ivan, from David Hammond". The paperback issue predates the hardback issued in the UK and the US in 1973. An uncommon book signed with only two copies traced at auction. Brandes & Durkan A8a.
