King Louis XII of France (reigned 1498 to 1515) was a popular monarch, called "the Father of the People" as the title page of this book indicates. Having reformed the French legal system, reduced taxes and improved government, it is not surprising that historians Claude de Seyssel and Jean D'Auton felt the need to write his biography. Other writers helped out, as indicated by their occasional names in the margins.
